Emergency Preparedness: What to Do When Your Elevator Stops

December 11, 2025

Getting stuck in an elevator is nobody's idea of a good time. Even though elevators are incredibly safe and reliable, they can stop unexpectedly, whether it's a power outage, a maintenance issue that's been ignored for too long, or just a mechanical hiccup. Knowing how to handle the situation keeps you safe and a lot less stressed until help shows up.

At Alchemy Elevator, we've been installing, maintaining, and repairing elevators across the Carolinas for years. We've seen just about every issue that can come up, and more importantly, we know how to prevent most of them from happening in the first place.

Why Elevators Stop

Before we get into what to do, it helps to understand why these things happen.

Power Outages

This is probably the most common culprit. When the power cuts out suddenly, most modern elevators will try to stop at the nearest floor or kick on emergency lighting. But if it's a widespread outage and there's no backup power, you might be stuck until the electricity comes back on.

Skipped Maintenance

Elevators have a lot of moving parts: cables, sensors, hydraulic systems, and control panels. When you skip regular maintenance appointments, small problems turn into big ones. A worn cable or low oil level might not seem urgent until your elevator stops working altogether. This is why we always urge our clients to stay on top of their maintenance schedule.

Weight Overload or Door Issues

Try to cram too much weight into an elevator or block the doors from closing properly, and the safety systems will shut everything down.

Mechanical Problems

Sometimes a relay fails, a drive system goes bad, or the main board has electrical issues. Older systems especially need component upgrades to keep running smoothly and safely.

What to Do If You're Stuck Inside

First things first: don't panic. Elevators are built with multiple safety systems. You're not going to fall, and you're not going to run out of air. The car is secured by heavy-duty cables or chains and emergency brakes that lock it in place.

Here's your game plan:

Stay Calm

Easier said than done, right? But seriously, take a few deep breaths. If you're with other people, help keep everyone calm by reminding them that elevators are designed for exactly this situation.

Hit That Emergency Button

Every elevator has an emergency phone or call button. Use it. It'll connect you to either a monitoring service or building management who can send help. Let them know where you are and what's happening.

Don't Try to Be a Hero

Never, and we mean never, try to force the doors open or climb out through the ceiling. You've seen too many movies. In real life, that's a great way to get seriously hurt. The elevator could start moving again without warning, or you could fall into the shaft. Just stay put and wait for the professionals.

Save Your Phone Battery

Once you've called for help or used the emergency button, go easy on your phone. The elevator's emergency lighting and ventilation systems will keep working, but you want to make sure you can communicate if needed.

Wait for the Pros

Our team or whoever services your building's elevator will get there as fast as possible. We know how to safely get you out and diagnose what went wrong. Once we've fixed the issue and confirmed everything's safe, you'll be back in business.

How to Avoid This Whole Mess

Look, emergencies happen. But a lot of them don't have to. At Alchemy Elevator, we've built our business around preventing problems before they start.

Get Regular Maintenance

This isn't optional. Our technicians check everything: safety systems, cables, hydraulics, control panels, and lubrication levels. Catching issues early means you're way less likely to have an unexpected shutdown. Plus, it keeps your system up to code.

Test Your Emergency Systems

Emergency lights, phones, and alarm buttons need to work when you need them. We test these during our service visits to make sure they're ready if something goes wrong.

Keep Good Records

Service logs aren't just bureaucracy. They help us spot patterns and catch potential problems. They're also required for inspections, so you might as well stay organized.

Educate People Who Use the Elevator

A simple sign near the control panel explaining what to do if the elevator stops can make a huge difference. "Press emergency button and stay inside" is pretty straightforward, but you'd be surprised how many people don't know that.
